Mission Statement & Guidelines(Draft 1: March 12, 2008)
This is Just a Draft Version,
So Please Email any Comments or CritiquesThe mission of the Vegan Social Club of Beijing is:to educate about and promote awareness of veganism — an ethical, compassionate, healthy and environmentally-responsible lifestyle. choice;to help Beijing become a more vegan-friendly city;to break down the myths and misconceptions about vegan diets (while simultaneously breaking down the myths and misconceptions about meat-and-dairy diets); and,to create regular social events where people interested in a vegan diet can learn, have fun, get inspired and make new friends.Everyone needs a supportive community: to this end, one basic goal of our club is to create more social space for vegans and people interested in veganism to learn, explore and meet other like-minded people. Through very simple, informal events, we make it easier to “give this diet a try.” Even if you’re a committed meat-eater and would never even consider a plant-based diet, our club is a place where you can come to know, appreciate and befriend vegans and let go of some prejudices you may have about people who call themselves vegans or choose to live a vegan lifestyle.Definition of the word “vegan”: “A diet and lifestyle. that seeks to eliminate the exploitation of animals for food, clothing, entertainment and experimentation.” Of course, in the modern world, where the use of animal products is nearly ubiquitous (in cars, computers, phones, books, bicycles, planes, etc.), it is practically impossible to completely remove animal products from one’s life. But to “go vegan” is to take daily, conscious, peaceful steps towards doing everything we can to stop the suffering of sentient beings with whom we share this planet. We can “stop eating our friends.” We can stop looking the other way while they suffer needlessly. We can choose to think about our daily choices. We can choose compassion.Non-vegans are always welcome at our events, and in the few months since we began our club, our non-vegan members have become some of our most prized friends. There is a lot of warmth, goodwill, friendship and laughter at our events. These are occasions where you very well might experience a kind of dialogue between vegans and non-vegans that is refreshingly enlightened, open-minded and where you can deposit a few prejudices where they belong — in the compost pile.We have no fees or dues of any kind. In the future, we might do events that are sponsored in some form. by partners (such as purveyors of vegan food or drinks), but we are committed to a policy of never charging fees or dues for any regular social club events. Sometimes we will help promote the events of other organizations, such as vegan concerts or charity fundraisers, which do charge admission, but the vegan social club has no revenue and never accepts any revenue from such cross-promoted events. We accept no monetary donations from any outside organization, nor do we retain any income or revenue in any form. Website maintenance, organizational and outreach work is done a purely volunteer basis.Any costs for dinners or lunches are split by those in attendance — i.e., we “go Dutch”. In cases where an amount of unclaimed change is left over at dinner or lunch, attendees may decide to donate this money to charitable causes of their choice, or leave the change as a gratuity for the venue. We have no official affiliation with any outside organizations, domestic or international, and no official opinions on any outside matters of politics, policy or legislation. On matters of religion, the club is officially secular. While many of our events are held at establishments run by Buddhist practitioners (to whom we are very grateful for their compassion and awesome culinary prowess), and while our membership is comprised of people of all different religious backgrounds (including many atheists and agnostics, including the founder), in order to ensure the integrity and diversity of the club, and to keep the focus on veganism, we must maintain a strictly secular atmosphere. Thus:The distribution of religious literature or religious proselytization at any social club events is strongly discouraged.Vegan or animal advocacy-related literature produced by religious organizations is also strongly discouraged. While most vegans obviously clearly care deeply about the welfare, interests and rights of nonhuman animals, we are not an animal rights organization per se, but rather just a social club. And, as such, we are not officially involved in any animal rights activities. Our primary aim is to encourage people to protect the interests of nonhuman animals by not eating them, wearing them or otherwise exploiting them.In terms of organizational structure, we are committed to keeping this as simple as possible. We have no interest in becoming a large organization. We are more interested in learning valuable lessons about how compassionate, ethical people of diverse backgrounds can form. small, informal communities to support a vegan lifestyle. and then to share those lessons with others who wish to duplicate or borrow from what we’ve accomplished. We implore all persons of conscience to consider the terrible price other Earthlings pay for the often trivial pleasures and unnecessary habits of the modern human diet. Be it our milkshakes, our steaks, our dumplings, our chicken wings, our bacon and eggs, our birthday cakes — behind each bite we take, there was once an innocent, harmless, helpless sentient being whose emotional needs and attachments are so similar to ours that, in classrooms all over the world, we use their names and images to teach our children the most fundamental lessons of life. Ask yourself, “Is this really necessary?” Ask your friendly neighborhood vegan, “Is this really necessary?” If you decide it is not, then no one cares what you call it — “veganism”, “earthlingism”, “life-ism” or just plain “goodness” — we implore you to take a few very simple and worldchanging steps. Mother Earth needs it, your body could probably benefit from it, and billions of voiceless innocents cry for it every second of every day
